VISITORS of Steep Holm have left some raving reviews about the "magical" island on TripAdvisor.

Commenting on the website, one person said: "A magical day on Steep Holm.

"The journey is by a very fast rib boat and only takes about 15 minutes. The steep, pebble beach leads to a path up a very steep hill to the Barracks.

"On the way I saw nesting gulls, henbane plants and hoards of lackey months. The Barracks is a very comfortable place to stop occasionally for tea, coffee and if you are lucky homemade cake and at the end of the day a glass of wine or beer.

"I enjoyed looking at the gifts for sale on the souvenir counter. The walk around the top of the island takes about 45 minutes and passes Victorian and Second World War military buildings."

Another added: "We spent a stunning 12 hours on Steep Holm after having last year’s intended visit cancelled because of bad weather. And it was certainly worth the wait.

"We were blessed with great weather (which hadn’t been forecast) so enjoyed a calm crossing and hazy, warm sunshine for most of the day."

Another visitor described their visit as "one of the best days" of their life. They said: "After four cancelled trips over the years (all due to the weather, no one's fault), we finally made it to Steep Holm yesterday.

"It was an incredible and special experience, honestly one of the best days of my life. We weren't bored once and ended up reading for less than an hour of the 12 we were there for.

"My advice is to just take your time exploring the all the secrets the island has to offer bit by bit, and soak up the atmosphere of this magnificent place as it changes over the course of the day."

However, not everyone had such a great experience. One reviewer said: "The best part of this trip was the boat ride over.

"You are stuck on the island for over ten hours.

"Don't go in the mating season, which is June to end of July, as the seagulls dive bomb you all the time, not a good sign when your told to bring a book to read.

"There is nothing of interest unless you're a bird watcher."
