THE team at Merlin Cinemas will be carrying out some "modest refurbishment" work of Weston's former ODEON building, the leader of North Somerset Council has confirmed.

It is hoped that the cinema will reopen in the autumn under the new name, the PLAZA Weston-super-Mare.

The ODEON closed its doors in June.

Posting on Facebook, Councillor Mike Bell said: "Great to meet with Merlin Cinemas today to discuss their plans for getting the former Odeon - soon to be the PLAZA, Weston-super-Mare - back open.

"The team are doing some technical and modest refurbishment work initially with a view to reopening in the autumn if possible.

"Longer term, they will look for further sympathetic improvements to make the most of this iconic building and its exceptional Compton organ."

Having started in 1990, Merlin Cinemas operate in mainly coastal and rural locations.

The company aims to repurpose heritage buildings that have been part of the lives of local people for generations.
