A VIGIL has been held at Weston's Grove Park to remember those who had lost their lives through aids.

Residents were encourage to attend the event yesterday evening (December 1) to celebrate the progress which has been made to tackle HIV and AIDS.

Posting on Facebook, the mayor of Weston, Cllr Ciaran Cronnelly, said: "Poignant World AIDS day vigil at the bandstand at Grove Park organised by the North Somerset LGBT+ Forum.

"It was a vigil to remember those who lost their lives through AIDS but also to celebrate the progress that has been made to tackle HIV and AIDS.

"Red ribbons were tied around the bandstand as a sign of remembrance.

"Significant progress has been made (it's estimated 105k people in UK have HIV and 94% of these have been diagnosed) but we have more to do - and stigma and discrimination still exists.

"The goal is to end all new cases of HIV by 2030."
