An empty shop built into the ground next to closed public toilets could be turned into a house under plans submitted to North Somerset Council.

At the western edge of the village of Kewstoke, a small car park on Kewstoke Road offers a stunning view of the Bristol Channel so most people parking up are unlikely to notice that they are next to the roof of a closed shop and public toilets. The shop and facilities could once be accessed by steps down from this level, as well as a door facing out onto Beach Road.

Now developers are hoping to turn the empty premises into a home. Plans show a kitchen and shower room with “small high level windows” across a halfway from a large open plan room comprising a lounge, dining area, and — behind a 1.2 metre high glass screen — a bedroom recess.

Although two of the walls are built into the ground, a large window on the front wall “has uninterrupted views of the Bristol Channel across Beach Road.”

The disused public toilets would not be a part of the house and would remain out of use.

Beachlands Developers Ltd applied to North Somerset Council for prior approval to convert the building to a home.
