A DRIVER who failed to stop for the police is in a "serious condition" in hospital after colliding with a wall in Weston-super-Mare last night.

Whilst out on patrol, Avon and Somerset Police officers spotted a black Audi A3 driving at speed through traffic over Hildesheim Bridge at around 6.45pm.

The driver failed to stop for the officers, who were driving in an unmarked police car and had turned on their sirens.

Police pursued the driver along Walliscote Road and onto the A370 Beach Road.

The Audi lost control, caught the edge of a traffic island before colliding with a wall at around 6.50pm.

The driver remains in a serious condition after being taken to hospital.
