A group of volunteers from the ages of 12 to 80 are set to take on a 50 metre abseil to raise money for Samaritans of Weston-Super-Mare and North Somerset.

The event will take place on April 14 at the Mendip Activity Centre's Sandford Quarry in Winscombe.

The volunteers will be supported by an experienced instructor from the centre, who is also a voluntary listener for Samaritans.

The Samaritans branch, located in High Street, relies entirely on donations to run its 24/7 free helpline for individuals coping with despair, crisis or difficulties.

Money raised will help with the branch's operating costs, including maintaining the building, training new volunteers, and keeping equipment up to date.

Managing director at Mendip Activity Centre, David Eddins, said: "We are delighted to be able to support such a brilliant local charity.

"Good luck to all the volunteers on completing their abseiling challenge."

Samaritans responds to around 14,000 calls a year from Weston-Super-Mare.

Anyone experiencing emotional difficulties, whether they include suicidal thoughts or feeling overwhelmed with life, can call for support.

The organisation believes that suicide is rooted in complex issues and is preventable

Samaritans says suicidal thoughts are only temporary and can be eased by talking to people.

The success of the Samaritans is due to public donations and the work of more than 20,000 volunteers, ensuring that help is always available to those in need.

The event will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm, and refreshments will be available.

Donations can be made via Samaritans' website.

The organisation and its volunteers appreciate any support provided to help them continue their work in the Weston-Super-Mare and North Somerset community.
