A North Petherton woman is planning a fundraising walk from Weston Super Mare to Seaton in Devon, where a ‘dear friend’ died of cancer last year.

Elaine Simmons will be raising money for the Seaton Hospice at Home service, which cared for her friend Kimmarie Skinner-Parkes. Kimmarie was born in Weston Super Mare but went to school with Elaine in Devon. She passed away aged 55 in June 2023, three months after her husband Paul had died of the same disease.

On June 10 Elaine will set off from Weston to walk the 60 miles to Seaton, arriving on June 14 – the anniversary of the day she learned that Kimmarie had died. She will be collecting donations along the way and has also arranged for two Seaton businesses to have collecting buckets; Kimmarie and Paul were well known in the town, and are sorely missed.

The money raised will go to Seaton & District Hospital League of Friends, which funds the Hospice at Home service.

A spokesperson for the League of Friends said: “The League would like to thank Elaine for undertaking this fundraising walk in memory of her dear friend Kimmarie. Our Seaton Hospice at Home nurses had the privilege of caring for Kimmarie in her own home, for her last few weeks. The monies raised will enable the League to continue funding this much needed service for future patients.”

Donations to Elaine’s fundraising can be made via the League's Facebook page - www.facebook.com/SeatonLOF/  or its website www.seatonlof.co.uk
