THE Mayor of Weston, Cllr Ciaran Cronnelly, has given awards to people and organisations that have made an "outstanding contribution" to the local community.

Speaking last week (May 5), the mayor of Weston said: "One of my final acts as Mayor is to present Mayor's Awards to members of the community I have met during my term, and I'm delighted to let you know about these outstanding individuals and groups.

"The Mayor’s Award is given to people or organisations who make an outstanding contribution to the local community and add significantly to the quality of life of those around them.

"The Mayor's Award formally acknowledges the positive difference made by those who live or work in the Town and is in recognition of their inspirational and dedicated work to Weston-super-Mare.

"The recipients are presented with a Weston-super-Mare Award, and their names are recorded on the Town Mayor’s Roll of Honour.

"Julie Crowther - Fuchsia Cancer Support Group:

"Julie has been working tirelessly for the Fuchsia Cancer Support Group since 2010, supporting local residents who have been touched by cancer, whether directly or through their loved ones.

"The impact of her commitment was evident when I visited the group, and it was clear just how vital this support network is to our community. Julie’s dedication to organising regular fundraising events for Macmillan has also been remarkable.

"Weston Ukulele Players:

"Having raised an impressive £9,000 for Children's Hospice South West last year, and their ongoing commitment to provide free entertainment to residents of the town by regularly playing at local care homes has been inspiring to see.

"During one of my engagements I got to witness first hand the joy they brought to residents – the smiles, the laughter, and all this done voluntarily.

"Borough Shield - Weston-super-Mare Street Pastors:

"The Borough shield is awarded annually to the person or organisation giving the greatest assistance to local people or charities. This year it gives me great pleasure to confirm the shield has been awarded to the very worthy recipients - Weston-super-Mare Street Pastors.

"Many years ago the Street Pastors were honoured with the Mayor’s Award for their steadfast dedication to our community. When I joined them on patrol, I was truly inspired by their care and commitment to keeping our people safe and the compassion they consistently demonstrated.

"The Street Pastors have had a profound effect on the wellbeing and care of the vulnerable individuals enjoying the nightlife in our town. Their efforts complement the roles of other key organisations committed to ensuring the safety of our residents.

"The Street Pastors volunteer their time during the most unsociable hours, and this selflessness is a credit to each one of them. Their positive impact on the community is highly commendable which is why I awarded them the Borough Shield."
