Discover the Natural Wonder of Cheddar Gorge and Caves

Cheddar Gorge is one of the UK’s most iconic natural landmarks. Carved in the Ice Age, this dramatic limestone gorge offers some of the most stunning views in England. As a Site of Special Scientific Interest and part of the newly established Mendip Hills National Landscape, the gorge is teeming with geological marvels. The towering cliffs and extraordinary subterranean stalactite show caves are home to fascinating prehistoric secrets, including evidence of early human life.

For those who want to experience the gorge up close, the Cheddar Gorge Trail is a must. This 4.8-kilometre walk takes you through the heart of the gorge, offering panoramic views, steep cliffs, and a variety of local flora and fauna. At almost 122 metres deep, the gorge offers a challenging yet rewarding hike with a sense of accomplishment once you reach the top. Explore weathered crags, mysterious pinnacles, and the diverse ecosystems that make this area so unique.
