Popular Weston-super-Mare cafe closes after almost 20 years

Rowen Tree Tea Room served its last customers on Saturday, June 27, with owner David Lewis describing the decision as “incredibly difficult”.

The cafe operated from The Stable on Wadham Street, having previously been based at Old Town Quarry.

In a Facebook post, David said: “Starting back in 2007 with just a kettle and some bought-in muffins, I never imagined the journey it would become.

“Closing has been an incredibly difficult decision but with the current financial climate, it is the right time.”

Reflecting on its final day, David thanked customers for their support over the years, particularly during the Covid pandemic and the business's move from Old Town Quarry to The Stable.

He said: “It was a very difficult day yesterday but I was so pleased with the support from all my loyal customers.

“I want to say a huge thank you to every customer who has supported the tea room over the years - especially through the challenges of Covid and our move from the Quarry to The Stable.”

David also paid tribute to the current and former members of staff who had helped make the business a success.

“Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to work with so many wonderful people,” he said.

Although the tea room has now closed, there is still a new chapter ahead. David said tea room volunteer Aileen will begin selling jewellery and running classes from a studio at Unit 8 in Old Town Quarry from the beginning of August, providing a familiar face for many former customers.

“As for me - I’m hoping to stay in catering, just this time working for somebody else,” he added.

The closure was also marked by The Stable, which said it was “genuinely very sad” to see David leave and thanked him for being part of the venue.

The cafe space will now close for a short period before reopening on August 3, serving coffee, cake, salads and sandwiches, with a full relaunch planned for September.
