Calls are growing for the development of a new railway station in a Somerset village.

Sadik Al-Hassan, North Somerset MP, has formally petitioned the House of Commons for a feasibility study into a station at Long Ashton.

He said: "Long Ashton is a growing community, but it's being left behind on transport with no railway access into Bristol and beyond.

"With a £1.25 billion healthtech campus now underway, the case for a railway station for residents has never been stronger.

"Without one, we're simply forcing more people into their cars.

"That's why I petitioned the House of Commons to call on the Government to commission a feasibility study into a new station serving Long Ashton to amend this glaring gap that holds back North Somerset residents."

Mr Al-Hassan warned that without improved rail connectivity, Long Ashton residents will remain car-dependent, contributing to congestion and undermining environmental goals.

He presented the petition in the House of Commons chamber last week.

In accordance with parliamentary procedure, Mr Al-Hassan read the petition aloud to MPs before its formal submission to the Government.

The petition, supported by hundreds of residents, now requires a response from the Department for Transport.

He has pledged to continue pressing ministers for a reply.

The MP has also committed to keeping constituents informed on any progress.
