A one-of-a-kind community cinema will be kept open thanks to the generous work of a group of crowdfunders.

The Roxy Cinema, based in Axbridge and one of the country’s smallest cinemas, needed more than £5,000 to remain operational and pay for vital upgrades needed at the art-deco picturehouse.

The business is entirely volunteer-run and seats 30 guests, and turned to the online community when it was revealed significant funding was required to keep it alive, in a campaign titled Rescue The Roxy, which met its ambitious four-figure target last week.

Cinema chairman Juliet Maclay said after the target had been met: “We’ll now be able to secure the Roxy’s future for the community and invest in expending the current facilities – in particular adding theatre lighting to be able to offer a more diverse programme beyond cinema.”
