NEARLY 700 Weston people were caught watching television without a licence during 2009.

Spot checks around the town saw a record 682 people being collared and fined, with a further 38 caught in Burnham, 65 in Clevedon and six in Cheddar.

TV Licensing's South West spokesman Warren Carr said: "On behalf of the vast majority of people who pay for their TV Licence, we work hard to catch those who attempt to cheat the system.

"These figures demonstrate that there really is no hiding place for TV Licence evaders, and we continue to be highly effective at catching them.
