POP legends Madonna and Sting have no worries but for one man having only one name has caused him no end of problems.Rex, who runs a sign shop on Locking Road, changed his name 30 years ago after he divorced his wife.He chose Rex after it became his nickname when he was 14 after playing a character of the same name in an amateur play.Passport officials rang him as they thought he had filled in his form incorrectly. They were amazed when he told them it was his full name and confirmed he was the only person in the country to have just one name.Performers like Madonna and Sting use their real names rather than their stage identities on documents.Rex, aged 61, said: "When I changed my name, my solicitor thought it was great. He said people will remember it and they certainly do."I decided to change it when I divorced my first wife because I just wanted a complete change."The passport office staff said they had some unusual names, but no-one had just one."Rex's name has caused him problems when filling out forms. Sometimes he has to put Rex down under the first and surname heading. Writing Mr in the first name section has been another way to get around the problem.People have been put off from writing letters thinking it would not reach him with just one name.Rex said: "One lady hung up on me when I was trying to register for a mobile phone because she didn't believe I had just one name."I had to ring up her supervisor and explain the situation so I could get it sorted it out."People are always ringing me at work and asking who they should make cheques out to because they think it won't go through with just Rex.
