CAMPAIGNERS fighting to restore Weston-super-Mare’s historic Birnbeck Pier were boosted when acclaimed actor Timothy West lent his support to their cause.

Mr West, who is a patron of the National Piers Society, paid a visit to the Birnbeck Regeneration Trust at the crumbling pier on Saturday.

He enjoyed a cup of tea with trustees at the Pier View information centre, which overlooks Birnbeck, before taking a tour of the area around the pier after it was recently cleaned up by volunteers from the trust.

A statement on the trust’s dedicated Facebook page said: “The trust was honoured with a visit from Timothy West.

“Tim met the volunteers who have been working to promote the project and saw the changes which have happened to the site since his last visit in February.

“We would also like to thank Crosville Motor Services which, at such short notice, collected Tim from the station on one of its heritage buses and gave him a tour of the town.”

Mr West also picked up a copy of the trust’s Weston At Its Finest charity calendar, which is supported by the Mercury.

The calendar is comprised of photos chosen by readers and is now available to buy from the Mercury office, in Waterloo Street, priced £7.
