A TOURIST spot in Somerset is set for a £150,000 expansion this summer after proposals to add a youngsters’ play fort were given the go-ahead.

Animal Farm Adventure Park in Red Road, Berrow will open a new castle fort and play barn over the next year which manager Krystal Finch said will help create more jobs and boost tourism.

Construction on the fort, costing an estimated £150,000, will begin at the end of July.

A play barn, costing an estimated £50,000, has also been approved by Sedgemoor District Council and will open in the spring.

Assistant manager Krystal Finch, who has helped run the park since 2009, said: “We are really excited to be moving forward and improving the farm yet again, it’s not easy to expand in the recession, but we have worked hard to continue improvements and additions each year.

“We really look forward to attracting more local customers.

“This is the biggest project we have done so far. It is something that can be added to over the coming years.

“This is really good because it’s getting kids active. Trying to get my seven-year-old off the computer is a challenge, but this uses their imagination and gets kids to be physical.”

She said the project is a boost for the local economy as well as tourists because it could enable the park to increase the number of local people it employs.

She added: “It shows how far in the few years we have run it that we have come and we are really, really excited.”
