CO-OPERATIVE Society bosses have apologised to Winscombe residents over the prolonged closure of the village's branch.

Speaking at a meeting of Winscombe and Sandford Parish Council on Monday, Steve Drake, the company’s regional operations manager, also confirmed the firm was working towards reopening the Woodborough Road store on September 8.

More than 30 residents attended the meeting, at which Mr Drake confirmed there would be no external expansion of the store, although the internal setup of the store will be changed.

Mr Drake, who has responsibility over all the company’s stores in the South West and South Wales, said: “We’re sorry for the impact it’s had on the community, it’s something we didn’t expect to take so long.”

He explained that work had been going on ‘behind the scene’ since the store was forced to close after a fire on April 25, and that some introductory offers would be available for residents once the store had reopened.
