A HUGE fund-raising appeal to save the historic bells at Weston's parish church is nearing the finishing line.Just a few more thousand pounds are needed to pay for the urgently needed re-hanging of the bells at St John the Baptist Church in Lower Church Road.Around £32,000 is needed to re-tune and re-hang the bells, one of which dates back to the 14th Century. The church has managed to collect £29,000 thanks to fund-raising activities, grants and donations, and needs just £3,000 to finish the job.The bells, kept in St John's tall tower, are rung regularly by the church's team of bell-ringers who regard them as an important part of the town's heritage.Anyone who wants to make a donation should call 01934 516503.* A CD has also been released by the church with the help of Weston College and Xpress Records to help raise money for the fund. It costs £6.50 and is available from the church.
