People on Streetlife were debating the future of Weston-super-Mare seafront and the role of the beach huts, after it was revealed the number of huts could increase if there was enough demand.

North Somerset Council said there could be more than 90 huts – there are currently just 24 – but no decision has been formally taken.

Many people reacting on Streetlife were not in favour of an increase.

Andrea H said: “Bye, bye Weston seafront because that is lot of promenade they are going to fill if there is 90 more beach huts going up.

“Why do Weston residents never get any say in the matter? (The) council just runs rough shot over everything.”

Nick H, however, suggested the beach huts were a positive thing for Weston’s economy.

“He said: “What’s wrong with the beach huts they look OK and bring in a good resource of money to our town.

“It was a trial last year that worked really well so yes they will put up more eventually so please don’t put it all down, as it is good for the town.”

Toby B disagreed. He replied: “Sadly there’s little evidence to suggest they’re currently adding anything to the town. Darren Fairchild (seafront manager) described them as ‘not a money-making’ project.

“They are also predominantly empty over the year (suggesting they’re also not bringing people to the town).”

Phillip P added: “As Toby has said, it’s not the principle of beach huts which is at fault, but the way they have gone about implementing this particular project.

“The idea of sitting some of the huts by the Seaquarium sounds a good one. If the council would only listen properly to the locals, and stop playing fast and loose with its own rules, I’m sure it would get on much better with all of us.”
