Man arrested on suspicion of arson after ‘severe’ flat fire in Weston

A man was arrested in connection with a flat fire which has left two people needing new homes.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service was called to St Ives Road, on Weston-super-Mare’s Bournville estate, on Friday at 12.30pm to a ‘severe’ flat fire in a two-storey building.

Police also attended an arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of arson.

He was later released under investigation.

No-one was injured, although fire crews rescued a cat from one of the flats.

A spokesman for Alliance Homes, which owns the building, said: “The two properties directly affected by the fire have been decanted and we are now evaluating the extent of the damage.

“The residents of the two flats have found temporary accommodation and we will be assessing their housing needs to get them settled again.

“The residents in surrounding properties have been informed about the fire and have been updated on what’s happening.”
