COMMUNITY safety bosses and fire chiefs are asking people to be extra vigilant following a string of arson attacks in Clevedon. The appeal comes after a string of arsons in the town, with firebugs setting light to equipment at local schools and a number of bins in the seaside resort. In the latest attack on March 25, hooligans set light to a bandstand and outdoor furniture at Mary Elton Primary School causing thousands of pounds of damage. On March 22 at 5.45am, a skip was set alight at the rear of Edinburgh House, Hill Road. The fire spread, causing damage to the phone and power cables to local businesses.Emergency crews were also called at around 12.30am on March 22 after reports of a bin fire at Alexandra Road. And in November, thousands of pounds of damage was caused after an arson attack at St Nicholas Chantry Primary School.Clevedon Local Action Team chairman Patrick McNeill said: "The number of arson attacks in Clevedon recently is rather worrying."Not only are these people putting themselves in danger, they are also risking the lives of other people."This is a serious issue which we will be discussing at the next LAT meeting."But what we are asking is for the people of Clevedon to be extra vigilant and become our eyes and ears and if they see anything suspicious, to report it to the police immediately."Avon Fire Brigade spokesman Adrian Mantle said the arson attacks were a real drain on resources.Mr Mantle said: "These people's actions are extremely dangerous."It puts not only the general public at risk, but themselves as well."It is also a drain on resources when crews could be at a genuine fire elsewhere."Mr Mantle said the number of arson attacks was starting to decrease thanks to the service's arson task force which carried out education programmes about fire dangers in local schools.FIREBUGS have also been plaguing Nailsea.Over the past two weeks there have been 15 bins fires in the High Street area.Young arsonists have been setting light to wheelie bins and rubbish bins at the rear of shops.Police are checking CCTV footage of the area in relation to the incident.
