'MINDLESS' arsonists attempted to mar an annual family firework extravaganza by setting fire to bonfire materials just weeks ahead of the big event.
Players and staff at Weston Cricket Club spent four hours on Saturday morning crafting a giant bonfire structure in preparation for the club’s public display on November 6.
But at 11am on Sunday morning firefighters from Weston were called to the Devonshire Road club as arsonists had decided to set fire to the arrangement.
Police and three fire engines were at the scene and water was taken from a nearby rhyne to help keep the hoses charged.
Cricket club committee member and player, Stuart Roberts, said: “It was difficult to see all that hard work we had done go up in smoke.
“Who would commit such a mindless act from which nobody gains?
“People of Weston need not fear as we have overcome this obstacle and plan to build an even bigger and better bonfire for the big event.”
Gates to the firework night will open at 6pm and there will be food and a bar with proceeds going to the club.
Tickets are available on the door and cost £10 for a family, £5 for adults, £3 for children and it is free for children under three.
