ASBESTOS could be scattered across popular village playing fields, councillors have warned.Concerns have been raised over whether the dilapidated buildings on Sharpham Road Playing Fields in Cheddar have been removed correctly. The buildings, which include the former football changing rooms and judo hut, have recently been torn down by a contractor. The company was asked to safely remove the asbestos inside the building, which is believed to be dangerous. But some parish councillors believe bits of the rubble are scattered across the site which could contain asbestos. The fields are used by hundreds of villagers for sports and dog walking.Cheddar Parish Council has decided to ask the contractor whether all the rubble has been removed and where it was disposed. However, some councillors say the firm was paid to do a job and have no reason to believe it has not been completed correctly.Councillor Eric Lukins said at a recent meeting: "I watched them doing the work and after it was finished I walked up to have a look."Parts of the grass were still covered with small bits and I bet they did not go back and make sure every last little piece had been cleared up correctly."Councillor Ceri Davies said: "We have a duty to this village to make sure the asbestos has been cleared correctly."We should find out where the waste has been dumped and if the correct procedures have been followed."Councillor Patrick Westby said: "I think we have complied with our responsibility because the contractor has confirmed he would comply with the specification we asked for.
