WORK on one of Highbridge's biggest building developments is finally under way.Contractors have been clearing the former Woodberry Bros and Haines site in Springfield Road and work is now starting on preparing the site for the first stage of the development.Building company Mead Realisations was granted permission in May to build houses and an Asda supermarket on the land but work was delayed because parts of the site earmarked for a car park were producing methane. Now contractors have been hired to decontaminate the site which means work could start on the roads and roundabout by September.Mead Realisations chairman, Derek Mead, said: "We have removed the rubbish from the site and in six to eight weeks we will start on the road access and then the roundabout. Asda wants to start building in November. I hope to have the housing completed in about another 18 months."Mead Realisations applied for outline planning permission to develop the site in 2004. The company has been told by Sedgemoor District Council that it must provide a range of accommodation sizes, including two-bedroomed properties on the site.
