SUPERMARKET giant Asda is forking out £800,000 on a new entrance to its Weston store but the work could cause months of traffic chaos for motorists next year.Store bosses have been given planning permission to allow cars travelling on the Weston Links side of Herluin Way to turn into Searle Crescent rather than having to do a U-turn at the roundabout.Part of the central reservation will be flattened and a filter lane and traffic lights put in to allow cars travelling into town to access the store by driving across the other side of the carriageway. The carriageway will be widened to allow for the extra lane. Work is due to start at the beginning of January but is not scheduled to finish until April 16. Traffic delays are expected while the road is cut down to one lane to allow work to be carried out.But Asda bosses believe the project will be of huge benefit to its customers and other businesses in Winterstoke Commercial Centre and the new entrance will make it easier for shoppers to access the facilities.Simon Fraser, head of car park development at Asda, said: "It will benefit all users of the Winterstoke Commercial Centre. One of our main aims is to alleviate congestion and traffic queues in and out of the store. It's going to help and make it generally easier for shoppers."It's been badly needed since we acquired the store and I think it will be good for us and other retailers at the site."Asda has been hoping to improve access to its store since it extended in 2003.It will also mean the traffic lights at the round-a-bout will have to be re-programmed to allow for the new filter lane.Work is due to start on January 8 and delays are expected while 24-hour lane closures are in operation.
