A FREQUENT visitor of Somerset has published a book which reveals the peculiar side of the county with an assortment of ghost stories.
Sonia Smith, aged 53, of Quemerford, Wiltshire, has visited Somerset since she was three-years-old and said she has gained so much inspiration for her book, Paranormal Somerset, from these visits.
She said: “I’ve visited Somerset a lot because it’s such a beautiful place. It’s strange; people will often sit next to me and tell me their story.
“I’m forever grateful because this place and these people give me such inspiration.”
Sonia said she has always been interested in folklore and fairytales and says this book is a chance for people to explore these different experiences which people have had.
The book includes spine-tingling stories from Burnham, Cheddar and Portishead, which include the intuitive nature of dogs, gnomes of Cheddar Caves and a knicker-pinching phantom.
All of the stories in Paranormal Somerset are derived from experiences of others and stories told to Sonia by people she has met on her travels around the county.
She said: “These people have had wonderful experiences which scientists have not yet caught up with. I actually do not mind that because I like the mystery of it. And if you push it in books then other people can enjoy them too.”
Sonia said: “These are quite natural experiences and people from all walks of life have them. These stories can make you laugh and really make you think, and I guess I was inspired to writes these stories down for that reason.”
Sonia has been writing professionally since 2007 but said she has enjoyed exploring mysterious tales and quirky experiences for quite some time. She said: “Since the age of 11 I have been interested in astrology, tarot and symbolism, and I think these ideas help you get through your muddle of existence in this life.”
Paranormal Somerset is published by Amberley Publishing and available for purchase.
