NORTH Somerset Council is joining forces with three other authorities to tackle congestion in the South West.

The four councils, which include Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset, will work to develop a bid for a slice of the Government's £1.4billion Transport Innovation Fund.

The fund was established to provide funding for innovative transport schemes.

A Future Transport vision is intended to be handed over to the Department for Transport early next year in the hope of obtaining funding.

The package would look to improve transport services by providing extra carriages on existing and additional rail services, re-opening rail lines and carrying out highway improvements, such as at the M5 motorway junctions 21 and 19.
