Avon and Somerset police are targeting drivers without insurance as part of a county-wide initiative which started on Monday.
Drivers in the area are set to have their vehicles randomly checked by automatic number plate recognition cameras – which pick up those insured and the type of cover the driver holds.
It is the first campaign of its kind to be introduced by the police and the scheme ends on Sunday.
The constabulary’s spokesman, Richard McKeirnan, said: “Owners of vehicles found to be uninsured will receive a letter letting them know we are aware they are driving illegally.
“Those who do not buy appropriate insurance could receive six points on their license, a £300 fine or have their vehicles seized – and potentially destroyed.
During January to October of this year, the police force seized almost 2,400 vehicles which were being driven illegally on roads across the area.
