An emergency service recruitment drive will take place in Weston-super-Mare on Saturday.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service will host a jobs fair at its Milton Avenue base from 10am-4pm.

The service hopes to boost the number of women and people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds in its workforce, standing at 4.9 and 4.4 per cent respectively.

Its spokesman said: “We think it’s important our workforce is representative of the communities we serve.

“During this recruitment campaign we are taking specific steps to raise awareness of firefighting as career among the groups currently under represented in our workforce.

“This event will provide the opportunity for women and people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds to learn more about being a firefighter.

“Nobody will be turned away. Once an application has been made selection is based entirely based on merit.”
