Fire breaks out at Tropicana on Weston seafront

A fire has broken out at the Tropicana in Weston-super-Mare this evening (Friday).

The blaze has affected Icescape – a winter wonderland attraction offering ice skating and other activities.

Firefighters and police are at the scene.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service dispatched six fire engines to the scene at about 5pm, including a ladder to check the premises was empty.

The Mercury has been told everyone was evacuated from the venue and the fire has now been extinguished.

One person had to be checked over by emergency services for smoke inhalation.

Early indications suggest the fire began in a kitchen.

Weston Town Council has tweeted tonight the fire was contained to Bare Grils [sic] kitchen.

A spokesman for Icescape said: “We regret to inform that there has been a fire at Icescape at the Tropicana.

“This means we have had to make the decision to cancel all sessions tonight.

“We deeply apologise for any problems this may cause and our teams will be getting in touch with all ticket holders to arrange a new date for sessions.

“We want to say a big thank you to all our staff and emergency services for making sure everyone is safe, and ask everyone to keep an eye on our social media for updates. Thank you.”

North Somerset Council owns the Tropicana and its spokesman said it is ‘extremely thankful’ nobody was injured.

Its deputy leader Elfan Ap Rees tweeted: “Great shame for Icescape but main building OK.”
