A VILLAGE'S football club chairman has been handed an award for his contribution to the development of the game at grass roots level.

Steve Bayliss, chairman of Cheddar AFC and a fireman in his full time job, has been handed a community award by Somerset FA.

Cheddar AFC is currently planning to move to a new ground, selling its current Bowdens Park plot to Tesco for a new supermarket.

The new ground in Labourham Drove would see a range of community facilities on offer to local clubs and schools.

Steve Bayliss, Chairman at Cheddar AFC, said “I’m delighted to have been given this award by Somerset County FA.

“It’s good to have the importance of grass roots football recognised and I hope this encourages more people to get involved with Cheddar AFC, which has a great future if plans for the new facilities progress.

“The new facilities will offer more male and female players, both juniors and seniors, the opportunity to enjoy football locally and we’d like to welcome more people to the club, from enthusiastic volunteers to determined managers, who I’m confident will enjoy the experience of supporting grass roots football in Cheddar as much as I do.”
