A Somerset town celebrated the past, present and future with parade floats and carnival rides last weekend.

The annual Axbridge Blackberry Parade and Fair has been a landmark event in the town for more than 50 years, taking place in September every year to coincide with the berry-picking season.

Different groups including the sea cadets, girl guides and brownies jumped back in time and took a look at the future with their creative costumes and floats.

Spaceships, vintage cars and bicycles were among the parade floats filled with popular childhood cartoon characters such as Popeye, Mario and the Toy Story cast, as well as 1920s gangsters guys and flapper girls.

The parade was led by the queen and princesses, who were followed by the floats and visiting mayors from Weston, Burnham, Wells and Glastonbury.

Deputy mayor Pauline Ham told the Mercury: “It was a really nice local day with a great atmosphere. The parade was lovely – sea cadets, girl guides, brownies and other local groups all took the time and trouble to make their floats.

“We had a great turnout and mayors from around the local area came for the civic luncheon.”
