Firefighters tackled a blaze which involved 60 silage bales and tyres at a farm today (Monday).

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a large amount of smoke from Townsend Farm in Axbridge at 1pm.

Crews from Cheddar, Burnham-on-Sea and Bridgwater and an operational assurance officer extinguished the fire at around 3.30pm.

A fire service spokesman said: “The first crew reported smoke and flames coming from a large stack of tyres.

“Firefighters got to work extinguishing the blaze with one hose reel jet and one 45mm main jet.

“At 2.04pm, crews were making steady progress using the two main jets, two breathing apparatus wearers and drag forks as 60 large silage bales, tyres and refuse were severely damaged.

“Crews used four breathing apparatus wearers, one compressed air foam jet, three main jets, one ground monitor and one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire at around 3.30pm.”
