TODDLER Memphis Powell is looking especially forward to the birth of his little brother - because he could save his life.Memphis, of Treefield Road, Clevedon, has a rare form of leukaemia and specialists were expecting he would die unless a suitable bone marrow was found by Easter. But the 19-month-old has defied their expectations, is showing no symptoms of the disease and is running around just like any other little boy. It is only a matter of time though before the youngster will need a bone marrow transplant to save his life. But his mum, Laura, has just found out that she is expecting another child who could prove to be the ideal donor. There is a one in four chance that the baby boy, who is due to be born in August, 10 days after Memphis' second birthday, could provide the 100 per cent tissue-type match the family has been waiting for.Memphis' father, Aaron, said: "When Laura rang me to tell me she was expecting another baby, it was the best day I'd had for ages."If the baby does turn out to be a perfect match for Memphis, it will feel 100 times better than winning the lottery."We're trying not to get our hopes up, but it's really difficult not to."If everything works out, the baby's umbilical cord will be frozen and then used in a transplant around this time next year."Aaron and Laura are urging North Somerset Times readers to log onto www.anthonynolan.org.uk for more information about becoming a bone marrow donor.Potential donors must be aged between 18 and 40 when they join the register, in good health, and weigh more than eight stone.Women who are pregnant, or have given birth within the last 12 months, cannot sign up.
