SOMERSET churches are putting on special services to tempt people back to church.

'Back to Church' services are being held at St John the Baptist Church in Axbridge, St Leonard's in Shipham and St Michael and All Angels in Rowberrow on September 30.

Members of the congregation are being encouraged to invite people who have drifted away from Christianity.

Reverend Tim Hawking, the priest in charge of the three churches, said: "We hope that it will give lots of people the opportunity and reason to come.

"We aim to have some popular hymns, make the services as warm and user-friendly as we can and have coffee and cake afterwards. But essentially it's about giving people a good idea what a normal Sunday is like."

Back to Church Sunday started in Manchester four years ago but more than 1,700 churches in the country will be joining in by holding special services this year.

Church attendance is declining nationally and people leave congregations for a variety of reasons including moving house, disagreements with members or a crisis of faith.

The services give people an excuse to check out church again. Services in Axbridge and Shipham will start at 10am and there will also be an evening meeting in Rowberrow at 6.30pm.
