YOUNG literature enthusiasts in Weston will become the first to take part in a national initiative thanks to a £15,000 grant.Members of Barcode in South Parade, Weston, will help to set up a 'book bar' in the youth cafe later this year using money from The National Lottery's Big Lottery Fund. The initiative, one of only 20 planned across the country, will be the first to be set up by The Reading Agency, a charity formed in 2002 to work with libraries to promote reading. The facility will be run by the youngsters who use the youth cafe and North Somerset Council's library service will provide books and give professional support when needed.Representatives from Barcode will also be involved in planning how the book bar will look and they will be able to help choose which books they want to see there.Town councillor Robert Payne said: "Many young people seem to be put off by the formality of traditional libraries. But with this scheme we will be able to take the books to the young people and provide them in a different and more exciting way."I am delighted that Barcode has yet again been singled out for an award, further endorsing the considerable success of this unique initiative from the town council."There will be a talk at Barcode on January 30 from 6-7pm to tell members of the public how the new facility will run and it is hoped the book bar will be set up by September.
