A WESTON councillor has written to the Government calling for urgent action to be taken to stop able-bodied drivers parking in disabled bays.North Somerset and Weston town councillor Mike Bell says advisory bays marked on the road outside the homes of disabled drivers are being ignored by an inconsiderate minority of other motorists. He has written to the Transport Minister Gillian Merron asking for the law to be looked at to tackle the problem. The advisory bays are provided by North Somerset Council for £30 to help those with mobility problems find a parking space near their home. However, the bays are only advisory and cannot be enforced by the police, traffic wardens or council staff.Cllr Bell said: "I have been contacted by a resident who has had a disabled bay provided outside his home but can rarely park in it. Inconsiderate motorists desperate for a parking space ignore the disabled sign on the road and park there anyway."What makes things worse is that nothing can be done. It is amazing that we expect disabled drivers to apply for bays, have the site inspected by councillors, ask them to pay for the markings and then cannot guarantee them the space."I have been in touch with council officers and the police and they both say that nothing can be done so I have written to the Transport Minister asking for the law to be looked at."Although the great majority of motorists respect the disabled bays, a minority of bay bandits don''t. It has got to be sorted out.
