A NEW mayor took the reigns of a Somerset town in a special ceremony.

Church bells rang out across the Town Square as Axbridge mayor Baz Hamblin stepped down after a year in the role, to be replaced by Ian Laken, last year’s deputy mayor, at a ceremony in the town hall.

Cllr John Albone was made the new deputy mayor, while town crier Yvonne Chamberlain was officially recognised as being town crier for more than 35 years, receiving the title of Honorary Freeman.

Cllr Hamblin spoke of his achievements in his time in the post, including setting up a Sea Cadets unit in the town’s youth centre after its Somerset County Council funding was withdrawn.
