PLANS to build a new £2.5million medical centre in Berrow will be resubmitted to Sedgemoor District Council in the next few days.

PLANS to build a new £2.5million medical centre in Berrow will be resubmitted to Sedgemoor District Council in the next few days.

The centre, planned for Brent Road, was put on hold after council planners raised concerns about the buildings design, risk of flooding and its impact on residential properties.

Developers GVA Grimley will now work with the council to make changes to the original plan put forward in January, before resubmitting it.

The development will include a medical centre, a pharmacy, an elderly psychiatric day unit and a new NHS dentist.

A GVA Grimley spokesperson said: "It will not replace Burnham Medical Centre, but will complement and enhance existing facilities. It is anticipated that the application will be resubmitted to the local planning authority for determination by the end of March."

GP partner at Burnham Medical Centre Dr Harvey Sampson said: "There are no plans to move from our current site in Love Lane. However, our premises have now reached 'bursting point' and there is no room to expand. We have therefore decided to build a branch surgery to serve Berrow and Brean."

The project has attracted contrasting views from residents of the area.

Berrow Parish Council chairman Andrea Johnson said: "It will be a huge asset to Berrow. The centre would save us time and reduce traffic in the area. I think everyone is very supportive of the project and hopefully it will eventually go ahead."

Burnham Medical Centre is part of the Somerset Primary Care Trust.
