INVESTIGATIONS are underway into the possibility of setting up a youth cafe at a Nailsea Leisure Centre.Councillor Andy Cole is asking if £98,000 held by North Somerset Council from a 106 planning agreement can be spent on providing a cafe - similar to the Barcode facility operating in Weston - at the Scotch Horn Leisure Centre.Cllr Cole put his appeal to the leader of North Somerset Council Alan Hockridge at a meeting of the full council last week.Cllr Cole said: "During North Somerset Council's Young People's Well Being Working Group investigations into youth facilities over recent months, it identified that a facility such as Barcode in Weston was needed urgently and that the Scotch Horn Centre would be the ideal location for such a venue."Barcode was opened in 2005 and is a bar for youngsters aged between 11 and 18.Alcohol and smoking is prohibited and the venue is open from early afternoon to late evening during term time. There is a proper bar which sells a range of non alcoholic drinks and food and there is a stage for entertainment and a wide screen television.Cllr Cole added: "Although the Weston facility was financed from council funds the operation is run completely independently and is a great success."If such a facility could be provided in Nailsea it would be such an asset to the young people and the town.
