Wedmore Harvest Home celebrated its 105th year with a fantastic turnout despite the rainy weather.

The event, which took place on Friday, was held to enable villagers to toast a successful year for the community.

The day began with a gathering at The Borough, where a service was held and the harvest royals were crowned.

The traditional procession took place despite heavy rain, and was led by the newly-crowned royals from Wedmore First School. The procession included tractors, old fashioned cars and a fire engine.

The butchers from Wedmore supplied 341lb of meat, including ham, roast beef and ox tongue for more than 400 people at the luncheon and an addition 400 at the children’s tea.

Ken Chick, who previously owned Wedmore Butchers, celebrated 50 years of carving the meat at this year’s lunch.

The marquee reopened at 8pm for entertainment, and in excess of 600 people went along to enjoy the music and sample the range of local beers and ciders available.

Members of the organising committee told the Mercury they have had to battle a rise in equipment price and find funding a new marquee after the company they previously rent from closed.

Secretary Lee Gadd, aged 36, was introduced to the harvest home committee by his father, Arthur, aged 65, when he was just 16 years old.

He said: “It was very difficult finding a way to afford the rising fees and still keeping our ticket price the same.

“We did it though. Without the support of the people that sponsored us it wouldn’t have been possible.

“The day went really well and I am pleased with how it went.”

This is Mr Gadd’s last year as the committee secretary after 11 years in the role and 23 years involved in the harvest home.
