THE thunder of tyres on tarmac will ring out across the Cheddar area this weekend. Hundreds of cyclists will be flocking to Somerset for the 2007 Kona Cheddar Bikefest. The fixture, formerly known as the Cheddar Challenge, has been running for almost 20 years and is run in conjunction with Bristol Bikefest. On Saturday and Sunday people will put foot to pedal at Broadway House, off Axbridge Road, and set off on a course around the village. Not only will there be the usual team and solo events, organisers are also planning a Nite Rider time trial. The time trials will begin at 7pm on Saturday and cyclists will be able to bag themselves £1,000 worth of bicycle lights. Entrance to the evening trials is free if competitors have taken part in the daytime events or £5 if not. Cyclists have also been asked to be extra careful and make sure bikes and equipment are well cleaned due to the recent foot and mouth outbreaks. Racing starts at 10am on Saturday and will carry on until 6pm. The Sunday race will start at 10am and carry on until 2pm. For more details call 01179 9660743.
