The best method to demolish Birnbeck Pier’s north jetty is being considered by North Somerset Council.

The authority gave the derelict pier’s owner, CNM Estates, permission to demolish the jetty in September 2016.

CNM Estates started work in January 2017, but was ordered to stop as it did not have the necessary permissions.

The company has now given the council a method statement, setting out how it wishes to carry out the work.

The document is being reviewed, and a council spokesman said it would respond in due course.

As part of its response, the council will lay out what must happen to the tonnes of shingle dumped on the cliff face in 2017.

The north jetty appeared to have been further damaged by last week’s storms, but the Birnbeck Regeneration Trust said this was because some concrete slabs beneath it had been washed away.
