A BIRTHDAY celebration took a turn for the worse when a man had to be rescued from his new speedboat by the RNLI.

A crew was called in after Ian Dowden and his two friends became stuck off the Burnham coast, during his first trip out in the boat on July 24 at around 8pm.

The Staines Whitfield lifeboat was sent out to rescue the trio, who got into difficulty as the tide went out, despite Mr Dowden’s four years of experience on the waters in the area.

The boat was later recovered through the crew moving it onto its trailer when the tide had completely gone out.

He said: “It is slightly embarrassing having to call them on the maiden voyage. I’d like to thank the crew for what they did.

“This is not quite what I had in mind to celebrate my birthday.”

Lifeboat operations manager Matt Davies said: “Due to the good conditions we were able to get to their assistance quickly and brought them safely back to shore. They did exactly the right thing by calling 999.”
