A 103-YEAR-OLD woman celebrated her birthday by tucking into her favourite meal.

Elsie Matthews enjoyed the milestone day with other residents and indulged in a three-course banquet of her choice which included roast lamb followed by raspberry trifle.

As the last surviving of nine siblings, she lives independently at Sewell House in Winscombe.

She has lived at her flat for the past 18 years where her wardens say she has been very happy and well cared for.

She had moved from Forest Gate in the east end of London where she lived for most of her life.

Before retiring and moving to North Somerset to be closer to relatives, she worked in a shirt factory providing clothes for Marks & Spencer and the armed forces.

Elsie was the youngest of five brothers and three sisters and has never married.

A spokesman from Sewell House said: "She has not been outside for several years, but still walks to the dining room for her midday meals although she is now finding this more difficult.

"She has a sharp mind and is good company and enjoys good health."

Elsie's family live close by with a niece and two nephews living in the village.
