Man who fought cancer receives honorary degree

A Bleadon man has been awarded an honorary degree in recognition of his contribution and support at a university.

Tom Foot, aged 71, was presented with an honorary degree of master of science at a ceremony last month.

He was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in 2006 and, after a long battle, had a laryngectomy in 2008.

Tom and his wife Sue were invited to lead a master class at the University West of England, in Bristol, about his experiences with cancer.

He was later invited back to lead regular talks on radiotherapy treatment and his discuss his experiences from diagnosis to today.

He has also been part of the interview panel for prospective students in radiography and radiotherapy.

Tom has always pushed his promote and ensure patients with cancer that they can continue their lives after diagnosis.

He said: “It was with enormous gratitude, great pleasure and much pride that I accepted the honorary degree.”
