CLEVEDON, Nailsea and Portishead are to get at least 30 new police community support officers to pound the streets. The new staff will start to arrive in the three towns in September and become part of the district's new 'neighbourhood policing team'.Each 'neighbourhood' will be allocated a beat officer and either one or two PCSOs.They will concentrate on quality-of-life issues and target problems including antisocial behaviour, illegal parking and underage drinking.North Somerset Police northern sector inspector Steve Date said: "The extra PCSOs will give a real visible presence on the streets."They will deal with quality-of-life issues, such as dealing with antisocial behaviour and problem parking, so the police officers can be freed up to investigate crimes."The new staff will start to arrive in the autumn with a full contingent in place over the ensuing 12 months. The PCSOs will all be based out of Clevedon, Nailsea and Portishead Police Stations and cover the northern sector of North Somerset.Insp Date added: "We will be flexible with the PCSOs and if there are issues in a particular area which we need to resolve, then we can concentrate the staff wherever they are needed."I have not got exact numbers as yet, but it will be between 30 and 36 extra PCSOs."The news of extra police staff on the beat has been applauded by local councillors. Nailsea Town Council chairman Marston Dufty welcomed the news of the extra PCSOs in the district and said he hoped they would target problems with antisocial youngsters in the town.Councillor Dufty said: "I hope that the presence of the PCSOs will be of benefit to the town and they are managed in such a way that allows them to make a positive impact on those nuisances which are of concern to the community."Portishead councillor John Gething said: "We need to re-establish the feeling of having a bobby on the beat."Everyone should know who their PCSO and their local beat manager is.
