YOUNG people across the district are invited to a day of fun and games when sports fans gather to compete for the North Somerset World Cup next week.On May 31, 13 to 16-year-olds will battle it out for the top trophy, which is being sponsored by the North Somerset Times and the Weston & Somerset Mercury, at Portishead Lake Grounds. The opening ceremony will begin at 10.45am, then at 11am the matches will kick off.Former Bristol Rovers manager Bobby Gould will hand out the trophy to the winning team. But apart from the football action, there will be plenty of other activities on offer.Youngsters will be able to have a go at sailing on the lake, a mobile skatepark will be set up and there will be the chance to do some climbing and abseiling. In addition, young people will have the opportunity to try their hand at bowls and cricket, thanks to sports club members. They will also be invited to take on the challenge of a 60-metre adventure run, complete with obstacles. Alan Rowe, of Portishead Youth Centre, said: "It will be great to see the youngsters taking to the pitch to battle it for the North Somerset World Cup, but the event will have something for everybody, whether they're football crazy and want to cheer on the action on the pitch, or not."There will be loads of fun-filled activities, and if young people book in at our registration point, they will be entitled to take part in some of them completely free of charge. There will also be lots of information for young people about North Somerset Council's youth service and from other organisations."Each team playing in the tournament will have a least two boys and two girls in it and will be allocated one of the countries competing in The World Cup and wear fancy dress as appropriate.
