A woman’s body was found in the sea off Weston’s Knightstone Island yesterday (Tuesday).

Officers from Avon and Somerset Constabulary, the coastguard, Weston RNLI and South West Ambulance Service were all called to the scene, off Marine Parade, at 5pm following reports that a body had been spotted in the water.

The RNLI dispatched both of its lifeboats and the coastguard sent its rescue helicopter to help in the search.

A police spokesman told the Mercury: “Despite efforts to revive the woman, her death was confirmed shortly afterwards.”

The death of the woman, who has yet to be formally identified, is currently being treated by the police as ‘unexplained’.

The investigation into her death has now been handed over to the coroner, who will compile a full report.
