A CYCLING enthusiast is attempting to raise sponsorship for a brave challenge in Brazil.

Phil Dowlan, of South Road, Weston, is planning a 180-mile cycling ride in the South American country to raise funds for CLIC Sargent, the UK's leading children's cancer charity, in memory of his sister Julie Pike who died in 2002 from acute myeloid leukaemia.

The challenge starts on November 2 in Rio de Janeiro with 19 other fund-raisers. They will first help and meet children at the St Teresa Home for Children with cancer before beginning the cycle trek from Ouro Preto to Tirandentes.

When the group returns to Rio, they will take the children from the home by train through the Tijuca Forest and up to the Corcovado Mountain to see the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

The 27-yesr-old said: "I have been preparing by training both on and off road. To raise a good sum of money for CLIC I need as much sponsorship as I can before I leave."
